Islander new New sports logo design unveiled

More than 200 Islander sports fans packed the Executive Surf Club’s outdoor patio for a March 10 party to unveil the University’s new athletic logo and kick off season ticket sales for men's and women's basketball.

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Athletic Director Dan Viola, with assistance from his staff and coaches, unfurled banners emblazoned with the new sports logo. Audience reaction was positive.

“It looks great,” said Michelle Christenson, a photographer with the Corpus Christi Caller-Times who was on hand to cover the event. “I like it.”

Sportswriter Brent Schrotenboer wrote that the athletic logo was a vast improvement over the much maligned “Tarpie” design, which he described as “Homer Simpson in a mermaid suit.”

Viola said the new design is more flexible and more appropriate for uniforms. “We wanted something that was more athletic and aggressive,” Viola said. “This design is also more flexible--we can break out elements of it and use them in various places. I think it will work very well for us.”

The Athletic Department also launched the sale of season tickets for men’s and women’s basketball. With just 2,600 seats available, the tickets are expected to go fast, officials warned. To order tickets, call (361) 825-5694.
