Dr. Jack and Susan Dugan: The A team
President’s Council co-chairs

There might be a sense of deja-vu when Dr. Jack and Susan Dugan watch their first Islander basketball game this fall. The college basketball game should bring back fond memories for the couple and also be, in part, the culmination of their past year’s work as supporters of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi

It was during a college basketball game, Susan first set eyes on Jack. “When I was a freshman at Central State in Oklahoma, I went to a basketball game and saw this good-looking player for St. Benedicts’ team,” she recalled. “I fell in love.” The “good-looking player” won the heart of his future wife and, during his senior year, St. Benedict won the NAIA national championship.

The Dugans jumped in together with their support of A&M-Corpus Christi after it was announced the school would become a four-year university in 1989. Aside from being co-chairs of the President’s Council, Jack is a board member of the Tarpon Foundation and Susan is secretary of the executive board of the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Foundation, Inc.

“Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is really the most outstanding thing going on in this area right now,” said Susan. Jack echoed, “We feel that A&M-Corpus Christi is the best addition to Corpus Christi since we’ve been here. We encourage others to visit the campus, see the progress being made and talk to the students. It's exciting to see the students’ enthusiasm for the University.”

“It is good for the young people,” Susan continued. “The kids don’t have to go away. They can go to school here.”

She added, “One of Jack’s biggest wishes is for this university to become more of a factor in this community and he sees intercollegiate athletics as that catalyst to rejuvenate the spirit in Corpus Christi.”

Jack added, “The City of Corpus Christi has been great to me and my family. We are amazed at the progress made at the University in such a short time. Much of this success can be attributed to Dr. (Robert R.) Furgason and his staff.”

“As a former college athlete, I believe the enthusiasm and excitement felt by the student body and athletes will spread throughout the community and add to the vitality of the Corpus Christi area.”
