A message from Dean of Arts & Humanities A&M-Corpus Christi is growing, and the College of Arts and Humanities (A&H) feels that growth more than any other college. Approximately 70 percent of the core curriculum, the 46 credits all students take in common, resides in A&H. That growth is also felt in the number of students majoring in the college’s disciplines. In fact, over the past eight years, all A&H majors have experienced significant growth, some by 100 percent or more.Since my last column, we have opened two new buildings, each of which creates important opportunities for students and faculty. The Performing Arts Center, a 1,500-seat concert hall with magnificent acoustics, is stimulating qualitative and quantitative growth in music. I am pleased to report that the Lichtenstein Foundation provided four student scholarships to form the Lichtenstein String Quartet. Also, the Corpus Christi Chorale, a 60-year old, one 100-voice adult community choir, is now affiliated with our music program and will use the PAC as its home. We opened Bay Hall, a classroom building that houses three A&H departments, Communication and Theatre, Psychology, and Social Sciences. New facilities create new opportunities for our students. Bay Hall has psychology and communication laboratories for students and faculty to do research. The Social Science Research Center, which allows faculty and students to conduct contract research and program evaluations for many community organizations, is also in Bay Hall. From summer camps in creative writing, band, and theatre, to art gallery shows, ethics bowl competitions, internships and research opportunities, concerts and plays, and international conferences run by our faculty, the College of Arts and Humanities should make you proud to be an alumnus. |
