Questions about the University? Worried? Need a little encouragement?
Parents' Council brings reassurance

Your son or daughter is off to college for the first time and you are worried. Are you really going to be able to help pay for their college education? Is this the right college for your child? Is your child going to be alright?

There is a group that can help answer these and other questions: the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Parents' Council. Art and Maribeth Jennings are co-chairs of the council.

"We encourage parents, grandparents and guardians to join," said Art Jennings. "We raise funds for programs not funded by the State of Texas and also keep parents informed about the University."

"We do offer a great academic experience here," added Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost Dr. Sandra Harper. "What we need the Parents' Council to do is enhance that experience, not only through their emotional support, but also through financial support. The Parents' Council helped sponsor our ethics teams that went to Washington D.C. and other students who had papers accepted at regional or national conferences."

Art Jennings continued, "The Parents' Council is also a network for parents. When we first came here with our daughter, Celeste, about 80 percent of the parents we met were from outside Corpus Christi. It is good for a parent new to this experience to hear from another parent who has had one of their children here for some time tell them, 'It is going to be okay.' With the Parents' Council you become part of the University family. The University experience can possibly be the best thing that happens to a student and a student's family."

He added, "I encourage parents to attend alumni/parents weekend during Homecoming, February 9-10, 2001. The alumni are our silver bullets. There is strong, active alumni support here. I recall during Buc Days, the University entered a float in the parade for the first time. Arnold Montoya, one of your alumni, let the students use his truck to tow the float and was there helping put the float together. He put in some long hours on his own. John Buckley was also very helpful. I was very impressed that these men gave so freely of their time and energy."
