Dokken does live webcast...
underwater
May 3, 2000--200 miles east of Galveston, 90 miles
offshore and 60 feet below the surface of the Gulf of
Mexico: Dr. Quenton Dokken, associate director of the Center
for Coastal Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus
Christi, served as the underwater host for the education
special, "Rivers to the Ocean" aired to schoolchildren over
the internet. Sporting scuba gear and oxygen tanks, Dokken
operated 60 feet below the surface, around the legs of an
offshore platform, identifying life common to the Gulf of
Mexico. The event was sponsored by a grant to the Science
Academy of Austin and the Austin Independent School District
from the Texas Education Agency. The special was produced by
the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Houston Public
Broadcasting Affiliate, KUHT-TV, was instrumental in
providing on-screen graphics and video photographs that were
aired over the web. Thousands of school children from Texas
and other states were able to interact with Dokken during
his two underwater dives and ask questions by way of a
moderator situated on the BP Amoco gas production platform.
According to TPW producers, this may well have been the
first time anyone has gone live over the web from
underwater.
