New CPA Review Program Gives Students
and Area Professionals an Edge

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi College of Business students and area professionals in the accounting field now have access to one of the first CPA exam review courses in the country that uses a blended learning approach to aid them in the goal of becoming certified public accountants. Through a partnership with Efficient Learning Systems, Inc. (ELS), the University uses a combination of online courseware and bi-monthly class meetings to deliver a review of the four-part CPA exam. In the past, individuals from the Coastal Bend interested in becoming CPAs had to travel to San Antonio to attend CPA review classes, but in July, 12 students became the first group to enroll in the new online portion of the review program at A&M-Corpus Christi.

“ELS has a great program with the best pass-performance of any review course provider,” Dr. Janet Tillinger, Chair of the Department of Accounting and Business Law, said. “As educators, we’re very excited about taking a proven and modern approach to preparing our students for the new computer-based CPA exam.”

According to Ben Martella, president and chief operating officer of ELS, A&M-Corpus Christi is on the leading edge of the industry as it transitions to the new computerized exam. “Working together, we have opened a floodgate of thinking about what students want and how we could personalize the courseware and the delivery model. Ultimately, student success is the key metric and we’re ready to meet this challenge.”

A&M-Corpus Christi professors expect student pass rates to increase as students sit for the last paper-based CPA exam in November 2003 and the first computer-based CPA exam in April 2004.
