. . . his way

Joe Sosebee (’85) always knew he wanted to be an artist. When he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Corpus Christi State University, now Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, he decided to get a teaching certification, too. It was a decision that changed his life. Sosebee has been an art teacher ever since and currently teaches 6th grade at Gregory Portland Intermediate School in Portland, Texas.

When Sosebee began receiving alumni mail from the University asking for contributions, it got him to thinking. “It just made sense. I’m in the education business myself. I preach higher education to my students and cannot overstate the importance I place on it. The University played a vital role in my life and now it is doing the same for some of my former students. So I thought I should do my part to contribute,” Sosebee said.

As many A&M-Corpus Christi alumni have done, Sosebee can choose to direct his gift to a particular college or department, or towards the University’s greatest need. All contributions help make up the University’s Annual Fund campaign, a yearly campaign to raise private funds for the University. It provides an organized method for alumni and friends to support academic excellence and student scholarships at A&M-Corpus Christi.

“I give now because of the opportunities the University gave to me and because the University plays such an important role in the arts in South Texas. I’m a teacher so I won’t be donating millions,” chuckled Sosebee, “but I plan to keep doing my part.”
