 Pulse!! Field Testing Begins
The first phase of field testing the Pulse!! learning platform, a military research project at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, has begun at three prestigious medical institutions. In late January, a pilot study for the Pulse!! learning platform’s playability and usability was conducted at Yale University School of Medicine, where Dr. Kirk Shelley is co-principal investigator for evaluation. Yale is also collecting online data for the platform’s playability and usability. Full Story
Reception for "El Progreso 1939-1940" in Legacy Hall March 1
University President Flavius Killebrew and the Board of Trustees of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation will hold a reception to debut "El Progreso 1939-1940, the work of Rodolfo Zepeda Mirabel and Dora Cervera Mirabel," Thursday, March 1 at 5 p.m. in the University Center, Legacy Hall. A presentation of the book compiled by Rosie Mirabal Garza that chronicles an era in Texas history will follow at 5:45 p.m. with an introduction by Thomas H. Kreneck. The Garza and Mirabal families have made the publication available at selected public and university libraries in the United States, Mexico, France and Spain.
 “Tom Tiratto’s Big Band Salute to Frank Sinatra”
The music of Ol’ Blue Eyes came alive on Valentine’s Day evening when Las Vegas-style entertainer Tom Tiratto presented his “Big Band Salute to Frank Sinatra” to a packed house at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Performing Arts Center. It was the second straight sold-out performance for the Bravo! Series.

Women’s Center Presents “The Vagina Monologues”
More than 1,100 people attended two performances of the award-winning play “The Vagina Monologues” Feb.15-16 as Part of V-Day, a global movement to promote awareness of violence against women and girls. “The Vagina Monologues” has been performed in cities across America and at hundreds of college campuses. More than 15 teams comprising around 85 students from area high schools competed in the 9th annual Ocean Sciences Bowl at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi on Saturday, Feb. 24. in the University Center. Full Story
 Family Health Fair Stresses Diet in Children
The College of Education at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will co-sponsor a Family Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 3 at the Antonio E. Garcia Arts and Education Center at 2021 Agnes St. The fair to encourage healthy, active family lifestyles will include demonstrations of nutritious recipes geared toward kids’ tastes, and health screenings geared toward adults. Awards, Honors, and Grants
 Dr. Claudia L. Johnston, Associate Vice President for Special Projects at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, delivered two presentations at the 15th annual Medicine Meets Virtual Reality (MMVR) Conference in Long Beach, Calif. Feb. 8-9. Dr. Johnston is principal investigator for Pulse!! The Virtual Clinical Learning Lab, a military research project exploring whether high-level medical learning can occur in virtual space.

 Dr. Richard Gigliotti, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, has been elected to the Executive Board of the Texas Association of Deans of Liberal Arts and Sciences (TADLAS). Gilliotti, began serving his three-year term on the board Jan. 31. TADLAS is an organization of deans in colleges of liberal arts or colleges of arts and sciences in public and private colleges and universities in Texas. Its purpose is to assist deans throughout the state with issues affecting their colleges and higher education.
 Dr. Susan Garza, associate professor in the College of Liberal Arts, has been selected to speak at the 2007 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) March 21-24 in New York City. Garza will speak on “Not Just L2: Representing the Latino Students at Hispanic Serving Institutions in South Texas- A Study of Literate and Language Practices.” Full Story
 Kelly Russell, an assistant professor in the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, has been named president-elect of the Texas Educational Theatre Association (TETA). He will hold the position for two years then serve as the organization’s president for an additional two years. Full Story
 Dr. Richard McLaughlin, endowed chair for marine policy and law with the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, has been awarded a $75,000 grant from the National Sea Grant Law Center for his project on “Legal, Policy, and Management Strategies for Effective Stewardship of the Gulf of Mexico.” The National Sea Grant Law Center was founded in 2002 to provide legal research and outreach services to the Sea Grant community and its constituents on coastal and marine laws and policies.
 Swint Friday, an associate professor of finance in the College of Business, has been appointed by University President Flavius Killebrew as Faculty Athletic Representative. As the FAR, Friday will work with Killebrew and Director of Athletics Brian Teter to ensure that athletics is maintained as a vital component of the educational program where student-athletes constitute an integral part of the student body. Friday chairs the Intercollegiate Athletic Council. Full Story

Guest Lecturer: Dr. Daniel Arreola, cultural geographer at Arizona State University, will give an address on “What Defines South Texas as a Distinct Cultural Region” Monday, March 5 at 9 a.m. in the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi University Center, Lone Star Ballroom. Arreola will address the issue of what it means to be a Hispanic Serving Institution and how administration, faculty, staff and students can use that designation to enhance excellence, increase retention, and improve graduation rates. The lecture is sponsored by the Office of the Provost’s Hispanic Serving Institution Initiative, the Clearinghouse for Mexican-American Research, Title V/Trio and the Faculty Renaissance Center.
 Groundbreaking for Wellness Center: A groundbreaking ceremony for the University’s new Wellness Center will be held Wednesday, March 7 at 12:30 p.m. on the East Lawn between the University Center and the Moody Sustainers Field House.
John O. Chapman Field Dedication: A pre-game ceremony announcing the John O. Chapman Field will be held Sunday, March 4 at 12:55 p.m. prior to the Islanders’ game against New York Tech. When completed later this year, the new press box and concession area will become the centerpiece for the baseball and softball venues at Islander Field on the University campus.

Patricia Durham, a doctoral student in the College of Education’s Department and Curriculum and Instruction, has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the VerizonReads Foundation to fund a R.O.A.D. (Read One a Day) literacy outreach program to promote reading comprehension and increase motivation for middle school students. Full Story
The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Financial Aid Office and COSTEP held a free Financial Aid Fair at Padre Staples recently to offer free financial aid assistance and help with University applications. Financial Aid assistance was available to all prospective college students regardless of which state college or university they plan to attend. Full Story
The Art Museum of South Texas will screen the foreign film “Sequins" Thursday, March 1 at 7 p.m. in the Art Museum of South Texas. Winner of the Critic's Week Grand Prix at Cannes, this film by French director Eleonore Faucher explores the unconventional bond between two women born generations apart. The two learn to communicate most poignantly through their shared passion for artistic embroidery. Faucher's exquisitely shot tapestry is a delicate but deeply moving ode to female empowerment in honor of Women's History Month.
