A sold out “Cowboy Christmas” Concert with multiple standing ovations for Western poet/singer Michael Martin Murphey crowned an evening filled with holiday cheer that was the first “Islander Lights” celebration Friday, Dec. 1. Full Story
 Just Dance!
It was Lights! Sound! Action! at the Glasscock Fitness Center recently when group fitness instructor Liza Wisner performed her Just Dance! fitness class for KIII-TV Channel 3.
Liza will be featured in an upcoming special on fitness with morning news anchor Katia Uriarte during a 10 p.m. and a 5:45 a.m. newscast in early January. Liza’s new group fitness class Just Dance! will be held Tuesdays and Fridays at noon in the Glasscock Fitness Center beginning Wednesday, Jan. 10.

First-Year Learning Celebration Features First Amendment Exhibits
More than 1,300 students displayed research projects related to the First Amendment during the University’s First-Year Celebration Thursday, Nov. 30 in the University Center Ballroom. This fall students from the University Core Curriculum Program/First-Year Learning Community Program explored the right to free speech and various social issues of their choice. The displays consisted of video, audio and written presentations. A&M-Corpus Christi's First-Year Learning Communities Program is an innovative nationally recognized program which helps students to make successful academic and social transitions from high school to the University.

to Earn Spot in National Ethics Bowl Competition
Three teams from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi finished in the top five at the Texas Regional Ethics Bowl in San Antonio with the top-ranked University team advancing to the national competition in Cincinnati next February. Full Story
A Shark’s Tale
A rare find in the shallow water off the University’s beach turned into a learning experience for marine biology students in December as they witnessed the necropsy of a 9-foot mako shark by a team of scientists led by Professor David McKee. According to McKee, the shark had been dead just a few hours when it was spotted by students waiting for a bus outside the University Services Center on Wednesday, Dec. 6. Full Story

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Receives Grant to Expand Houston Area Students’ Access to College Education: Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has received a $102,500 grant from the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation (TGSLC) to help fund the cost of a college education for first-generation low-to-moderate, income students from the Houston area. Wheeless Named to Hispanic Student Success Team: Dr. Virginia Wheeless, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, has been selected to serve on the Hispanic Student Success team of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). The special projects team composed of representatives for universities in 24 states will look at factors surrounding the success of 11 institutions of higher learning that are achieving high graduation rates among Hispanic and Latino students. The AASCU is expected to release the group’s findings within the next year.
Proposal Solicitation: The University has received an Extramural Associates Research Development Award from the National Institutes of Health. The goal of the award is to stimulate faculty research, and $40,000 (total) funding is available for faculty projects. This solicitation requests research proposals from faculty in all disciplines. Bahia Grande Restoration Team Award: The Center for Coastal Studies and Division of Nearshore Research were recently honored as part of the Bahia Grande Restoration Team efforts to restore the Bahia Grande in extreme South Texas. The team received the 2006 Coastal America Partnership Award that highlights their goal to restore and protect the coastal environment. Bahia Grande is a shallow basin that was altered from the construction of the Brownsville Ship Channel in the 1930s and construction of State Highway 48. Full Story

Weight Watchers: Recreational Sports will host a Weight Watchers informational meeting Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 12:45 p.m. in the Glasscock Fitness and Wellness Center. Weight Watchers is offering its “Super Saver” 17-week savings program on campus for just $10.35 a week. Meetings are held Tuesdays at noon in the Wellness Center at Glasscock Fitness Center. Early Bird Exercise: Recreational Sports will offer 6:30 a.m. group fitness classes in the spring. Faculty, staff and student workers enjoyed tamales with all the fixings during the Tamalada Christmas celebration in December. The annual event sponsored by the University President’s office has been a holiday campus tradition for more than 20 years.
Alpha Epsilon Delta raised $3,000 for Driscoll Children’s Hospital during the pre-professional honor society’s 4th annual Charity Ball. The event held in the University Ballroom featured a silent auction which doubled the average money raised over previous years. Alpha Epsilon Delta President Nathan Johnson presented the check to Lizzette Gonzales, director of volunteer services at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
The University Counseling Center held a "World AIDS Day” memorial service Friday, Dec. 1 on the University Center East Lawn. World AIDS Day was established in 1988 by the World Health Organization to focus global attention on the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The service included a speaker from the Coastal Bend AIDS Foundation, a musical selection by Charles Vasquez, a healing drum circle led by Dr. Lon Seiger, and a viewing of the HIV/AIDS Awareness Quilt created by University students and staff.
The A&M-Corpus Christi women’s basketball team used a dominating performance on the glass to capture the 2006 Flint Hills Resources Islander Classic championship 63-48 over Southern Mississippi at the American Bank Center Arena, Sunday, Dec. 17. Full Story
