A&M-Corpus Christi Among State’s Top 10 Public Research Universities

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi ranks among the state’s top 10 public universities in research expenditures according to a report recently released by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

The study rated A&M-Corpus Christi 10th in the state and second among the nine Texas A&M System universities with $13.7 million in research expenditures for 2006. Texas A&M University in College Station was second in the state with research expenditures of $446.1 million.

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is also the leading small specialized research university in Texas according to a survey released by Academic Analytics, a Pennsylvania-based company that reviews scholarly output of doctoral programs throughout the country. In preparing its rankings, Academic Analytics studied grant data and examined the number of book and journal articles published by faculty, as well as journal citations, awards, honors, and grants received. The rankings are based on expenditures rather than awards because expenditures more accurately reflect current levels of research activity.

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi faculty and graduate students are conducting extensive research in diverse areas.  Among those areas are the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, which is leading the way in assuring the long-term sustainable use and conservation of the Gulf of Mexico; the Conrad Blucher Institute, which is conducting innovative research in the development and application of new technology in surveying and scientific measurement; the Center for Water Supply Studies, which is evaluating new strategies for local and regional management of surface and subsurface water resources; and Pulse!! an interactive virtual environment simulating operational health-care facilities that employs cutting-edge technologies to create a realistic, complex, high-fidelity virtual health-care lab.
