State Rep. Solomon Ortiz Jr. and A&M System Chancellor Mike McKinney led a group of Texas state legislators on a tour of the campus Thursday, April 10. Legislators visited the Harte Research Institute, the Engineering Technology labs, the Early Childhood Development Center and heard from local leaders about the University’s need for an engineering school.
 
President’s Council Art Scholarship CompetitionPresident’s Council Awards Art Scholarships
The 2008 President’s Council student art exhibit and reception was held Tuesday, April 15, at the Islander Art Gallery. Winners of the Council’s scholarship competition were Clarita Fajutag, first place ($1,000) for “Kai Goya-Graf;” Luis Corpus, second place ($750) for “Pretty in Pink;” and Reuben Njaa, third place ($500) for “Right Passo.” James Murray received first place ($500) for “Threshold” in the new 3-D sculpture category. Their art is on display in the University Center, Legacy Hall.
 
Kirkland Distinguished Visitor Addresses CampusKirkland Distinguished Visitor Addresses Campus
Mike Shaw, the 2008 recipient of the annual G. Russell Kirkland Distinguished Visitor in Business Administration Award, presented by the College of Business, spoke to students, faculty and the community Tuesday, April 22, at the Performing Arts Center. Shaw has built a four-state group of automobile dealerships into one of the largest minority-owned car dealers in the nation. Recipients of the award are honored for their personal accomplishments and their contribution to the success of students, faculty, the University and the Corpus Christi community.
 
University Announces Gift from AEP TexasAEP Texas Presents $25,000 Check to The University
AEP Texas presented $25,000 to support the University's greatest needs during an April ceremony. AEP Texas, headquartered in Corpus Christi, has supported the University since 1980 with contributions to the President’s Council, the Parents’ Council, the Athletics/Tarpon Foundation and scholarships and community events including the State of the University Luncheon and Islander Lights.
 
Holocaust Expert Addresses World Affairs CouncilGenocide Expert Addresses World Affairs Council
John Herrernan, director of the Genocide Prevention Initiative of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Committee on Conscience, spoke on “Contemporary Genocide” at the World Affairs Council of South Texas luncheon Wednesday, April 2, at the Omni Bayfront Tower. Herrernan, who also spoke to students on the University campus, has 20 years of worldwide experience in human rights and post-conflict reconstruction projects.
 
Author of 'Nun Study' Speaks on Healthy Aging
Dr. David Snowdon
, author of the book “Aging with Grace: What the Nun Study Teaches Us about Leading Longer, Healthier, and More Meaningful Lives,” was the final speaker in the University’s 60th Anniversary Speaker Series. Snowdon, one of the world’s leading experts on Alzheimer’s disease, is a professor in the Department of Neurology in the College of Medicine and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky.
 
Theresa Behenna addressed around 60 University employees on “Moving Forward” Administrative Professionals Honored at Luncheon
Motivational speaker, pianist and author Theresa Behenna addressed around 60 University employees on “Moving Forward” during Administrative Professionals’ Appreciation Day. At the second Administrative Professionals’ Appreciation Luncheon, employees sang along with Behenna and had a chance to win door prizes.
 
WStudents, faculty and staff learned about the health and wellness resourcesellness Expo Offers Free Screenings
Students, faculty and staff learned about the health and wellness resources available in the Coastal Bend during the Wellness Expo Wednesday, April 16, in the University Center. Health and wellness screenings were offered and beauty, fitness and sport clubs demos were featured. More than 40 venders participated including the American Diabetes Association, Pathways to Wellness Yoga and Total Health Center, Christus Spohn Breast Care Program and the Coastal Bend Blood Center.
 
Film Festival Provides Movie Premiere ExperienceFilm Festival Provides Movie Premiere Experience
Moviegoers attending the Islander Short Film Festival experienced a mock Hollywood premiere complete with paparazzi, formal dress, and a red carpet Friday, April 11, in the Warren Theater. Coastal Bend filmmakers screened 10 to 15 selections during the event themed “A Red Carpet Affair.” Donations of $10 scored VIP access that included a shuttle ride to the theater, a photograph and invitation to the VIP reception.
 
Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) hosted its “Take a Reading Road Trip” book fairBook Fair Raises Money for ECDC Library
The Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) hosted its “Take a Reading Road Trip” book fair Monday, April 7, through Friday, April 11, in the ECDC Library. The annual book fair raises money to purchase books for the school library. Children’s books in both English and Spanish were available for purchase.
 
AutoCheck Clinic Identifies Polluting Vehicles
The Pollution Prevention Partnership held a free AutoCheck Clinic Saturday, April 26, in the Hammerhead parking lot. AutoCheck is a state-of-the-art auto engine analyzer that quickly identifies vehicles that are discharging harmful pollutants into the air. When a high-polluting automobile is identified, AutoCheck schedules the vehicle for repairs at a participating garage, typically with no cost to the owner.

Gen. Marc Cisneros, president of the Kenedy Memorial Foundation, addressed more than 30 honors students Thursday, April 3, in the University Center, Legacy Hall. The Kenedy Memorial Foundation Scholarship Luncheon provided honors students with an opportunity to meet Kenedy Foundation members and to thank them for their generosity.
 
University Orchestra Performs Classical Works
The University Orchestra performed works by J.S. Bach and Sergei Rachmaninoff during a concert Tuesday, April 29, in the Performing Arts Center. The concert was led by conductor Dr. Ronald Scott and featured soloists Arlene Long, Sara Ymbert, Dr. Shane Anderson and Dr. Diana Sipes.
 
Writer, producer and director Steven John RossAward-Winning Filmmaker Presents Documentary
Writer, producer and director Steven John Ross presented a special screening of his latest award-winning documentary “Winslow Homer: Society and Solitude” Friday, April 25, in Bay Hall, Room 104. The two-hour documentary profiling the life of 1800s American painter Winslow Homer was followed by a question-and-answer session with Ross. The screening kicks off the 18th season of “The Territory” independent film series, which begins Saturday, June 14, on KEDT-TV Channel 16.
 
Awards, Honors and Grants
Dr. Robert Bezdek, Dr. Bart Cook, Alicia Jasso, Dr. Tim Wells, and Dr. Ray Whitmire received 35-year service pinsMore than 100 employees were honored at the annual Islander Awards Celebration Friday, April 4, in the University Center, Lone Star Ballroom. During the event, pins indicating five incremental years of service were awarded.  Dr. Robert Bezdek, Dr. Bart Cook, Alicia Jasso, Dr. Tim Wells, and Dr. Ray Whitmire received 35-year service pins. In addition, Faculty and Staff Excellence Award nominees and winners were recognized along with employees who received degrees and other professional certifications.  
 
Student Employee Awards eventSelena Armendarez, from the Women’s Center for Education and Service, was named “Student Employee of the Year” at an event recognizing outstanding student workers Thursday, April 17, in the University Center, Bayview Room. She received a $100 SandDollars card from Career Services and a $250 scholarship from the Financial Aid Office. First runner-up Joshua Lowry (Career Services) received a $75 SandDollars card and second runner-up Leslee Basse (Title V/TRIO) received a $50 SandDollars card. 
 
The “Island Waves” student newspaper won eight awards and “The Windward Review,” literary magazine earned another three citations at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) Conference held Saturday, April 5, in College Station. Full Story.
 
Around the Island
The Department of Theatre will present its One-Act Play Festival Monday, May 5, through Thursday, May 8, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Warren Theatre, Center for the Arts. Performances include four shows per evening. The festival, which is recommended for mature audiences, is free and open to the public.
 
The Department of Music will present the Lichtenstein String Quartet in concert Tuesday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public.
 
President Killebrew’s spring Faculty/Staff Meeting will be held Wednesday, May 7, in the Performing Arts Center. Refreshments will be served in the lobby at 8 a.m. and the meeting will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m.
 
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will hold its spring 2008 Commencement Saturday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the American Bank Center arena. Commencement speakers will be A&M System Chancellor Michael D. McKinney and Elizabeth Benson-Landau, who is graduating with a bachelor of arts in sociology earning a 3.8 grade point average.

Islander Tribute
Three University students who died during the last year were honored at the annual Islander Tribute Tuesday, April 8, in Lee Plaza. This year’s observance remembered Amber Skolnik, College of Liberal Arts; Joshua Mazurek, College of Science and Technology; and Joseph M. Elliot, College of Education.
 
Will Bullard visited CJ Elizondo at Driscoll Children's Hospital
Fresh off his second-place finish in the State Farm College Slam Dunk Championships, Islander basketball player Will Bullard visited CJ Elizondo at Driscoll Children's Hospital in early April. CJ had just been released from surgery about an hour prior to the visit and was thrilled to see his favorite Islander basketball player. Full Story.

Around 15 ninth-graders from the Moody High School Innovation Academy collected fish, crab, shrimp and other samples Saturday, April 12, at the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Laguna Madre Field Station. Students and instructors spent the night at the field station, collecting data.
 
Campus Activities Board Talent Show
The Campus Activities Board Talent Show featured performances ranging from singing and baton twirling to hip-hop and expressive dances. The winners were Brittani Booker, first place; Khara Odibo, second place; Celeste Torres, third place; and Deeadra Piper, People’s Choice Award.
 
Retiree Luncheon
The annual A&M-Corpus Christi Retiree Luncheon was held Friday, April 4, in the Performing Arts Center. Approximately 40 retirees and their guests visited with colleagues and heard about the University’s accomplishments over the last year.

More than 150 fifth-grade students from the West Oso Independent School District learned about conducting restaurant inspections and crime scene investigations during the Science Rules! Exposition in the University Center, Lone Star Ballroom. The interactive learning experience is designed to stimulate interest in science.
 
“Year in Sand,” a sculpture created by Professor of Art Greg Reuter
Year in Sand,” a sculpture created by Professor of Art Greg Reuter, was installed in front of the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies Tuesday, April 1. Reuter’s work explores the textural variations found at Padre Island National Seashore and reflects the sublime beauty in nature left behind by natural forces including tides, wind, vegetation and wildlife.
