Fair Promotes Preventative Health Care

Nursing Student Checks Vital Signs of University Employee

As part of the University’s campaign to stress diabetes prevention through proactive healthcare, nursing students offered free health screenings of glucose levels, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure for all students and employees during the Know Your Numbers Health Fair sponsored by the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and the Department of Kinesiology.

“The Corpus Christi area faces a diabetes epidemic that has tremendous costs to our community both in human and business terms,” said Dr. Mary Jane Hamilton, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. “According to the American Diabetes Association, one out of three children born since 2000 in the Corpus Christi area will develop diabetes. That means that a huge segment of ‘future’ employees could be unable to fully and healthfully enter the workforce, thus placing the Corpus Christi area at a competitive disadvantage to other communities competing for jobs and investment.”
