Events Bring Plight of the Homeless/Underemployed to Light

Students portray homelessStudents in the honors macroeconomics principles class set up a “box city” in front of the Mary and Jeff Bell Library to bring attention to the plight of the homeless as part of its “Fight Poverty in Corpus Christi” campaign in April. The highlight of the week’s event was a dinner and silent auction in the University Center Lone Star Ballroom where a simple meal of soup and bread was served. Approximately $2,000 was raised to benefit Corpus Christi Metro Ministries which is celebrating its 25th year in Corpus Christi. Sean-Michael Hazuda, chief executive officer of Metro Ministries, was keynote speaker. According to Hazuda, Metro Ministries currently serves more than 4,000 people, including both the homeless and the working poor, those people who have jobs but don’t qualify for assistance or earn enough money to sustain basic needs.
