Songok Wins NCAA National Championship
Junior distance runner Shadrack Songok brought more national recognition to the Islander athletic programs in June, winning the 10,000-meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. After his victory Songok, the first Islander athlete to claim a national title, was named the men’s 2007 Capital One/Southland Conference Athlete of the Year.
Now a three-time All-American, Songok won conference and regional titles in cross country en route to a 19th-place finish at the NCAA Championship. He also won the 1,500-meter run at the SLC outdoor meet, while posting league records in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs.
Songok, who was also named to the All-SLC Academic Team, was honored for his achievements June 16, during the game between the Corpus Christi Hooks and the Frisco RoughRiders at Whataburger Field. |
