Conference for Mathematics Educators Held on Campus
The third annual (ME)^2 By the Sea Mathematics Conference attracted more than 300 teachers from across the Coastal Bend. Sponsored by the University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Coastal Council of Teachers of Mathematics (CCTM), the conference emphasized curriculum alignment and mathematics engagement for kindergarten through college students.
In keeping with this year’s motto of “Making Mathematics Engaging,” more than 35 conference workshops featured hands-on activities teachers can use to address a variety of topics in the mathematics curriculum.
“This conference was the largest mathematics education professional development opportunity for teachers of all levels,” said University professor Elaine Young, president of the Coastal Council of Teachers of Mathematics. “Presenters were practicing mathematics teachers and educators, who presented ideas for teaching that they have found effective in the classroom.”
A lunchtime play was performed by Drs. Nadina Duran-Hutchings and George Tintera of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics celebrating the 300th anniversary of Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler, who was born in 1707 and considered one of the greatest mathematicians of that century.
