Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Women's Basketball The A&M-Corpus Christi women’s basketball team used a dominating performance on the glass to capture the 2006 Flint Hills Resources Islander Classic championship 63-48 over Southern Mississippi at the American Bank Center Arena, Sunday, Dec. 17. Jillianne Duffey and Elisa Beagle each recorded double-doubles as the Islanders grabbed 58 rebounds to the Golden Eagles’ 33. Duffey, who was named to the all-tournament team, finished with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Beagle scored 14 points and snared a career-high 16 rebounds. Kirbria Lewis also recorded double-digits in rebounds with 10.Nicole Duncan, who was named the tournament MVP, finished the game with 13 points. She had 37 points in the two games, and tied the school record for three-pointers with six against St. Mary’s in the first round. The Islanders struggled early, falling behind 15-11 with 8:46 left in the first half. However, the Islanders took a 27-19 lead with a16-4 run just before intermission. Southern Miss pulled to within seven points early in the second half on a basket by Emer Foley, but six straight points by the Islanders pushed the lead to 13. Duffey had four points in the paint and Kirbria Lewis hit a jumper with 17:16 left for a 34-21 advantage. The Golden Eagles would get no closer than nine points the rest of the game as the Islanders led by as many as 19 in the second half. This is the second year the Islanders have hosted the Flint Hills Resources Islander Classic. The Islander men will host their version of the tournament Friday and Saturday Dec. 29-30. All University faculty and staff will be admitted free.
