Panelists Discuss Little-Known Dangers of Cervical Cancer

In an effort to raise awareness of the world’s number one killer of women, the University Women’s Center sponsored a panel to get out the word in January as part of National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.

Slide lectureOn Thursday, Jan. 25, Corpus Christi obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Noe Lira, MD and Elsie De Leon, RN, BSN from University Health Center, discussed the facts of cervical cancer and provided information about how women can protect themselves against this deadly disease during a panel discussion in the University Center.

“Not many people realize the dangers posed by cervical cancer,” said Rhonda Williamson, director of the Women’s Center. “It’s alarming that an increasing number of cervical cancer cases are occurring in young women. But, with advances in medicine, this deadly disease is becoming increasingly treatable and preventable.”

Since 1995, the Women's Center for Education and Service has helped thousands of women through programs at the University and throughout Corpus Christi and neighboring communities.
