Ribbon Cutting Celebrates Opening of Dr. Jack and Susie Dugan Wellness Center
Dr. Jack Dugan (center, left) and University President Flavius Killebrew were joined by elected officials, community leaders and well-wishers at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Dr. Jack and Susie Dugan Wellness Center, Saturday, Jan. 24. Funding for the $21 million center was seeded by a $1 million from Dugan in his late wife’s memory. The ceremony was followed by tours of the facility. Later in the day, the Islander men’s basketball team beat UT-San Antonio in the first-ever Southland Conference game on Ward Island. |

 Parade, Tailgate, Game Cap Homecoming Week
Join with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi students and alumni Saturday, Feb. 7, as we top-off a week of celebrating Homecoming 2009 that began Monday, Feb. 2. The party starts at 5 p.m. with the annual Homecoming Parade beginning on Mesquite Street. Following the parade, enjoy the greatest tailgate of the year at the Alumni Shrimp Boil in parking lot 7 of the American Bank Center. Then at 7 p.m., cheer the Islander women’s basketball team on to victory against Nichols State in the American Bank Center Arena.  Bastidas Explains His 'Layers' Exhibition
Ecuadorian artist Hugo Bastidas presented a lunchtime lecture about his exhibition “Layers” Friday, Jan. 23, at the Islander Art Gallery. “Layers” focuses on nature, the cosmos and the inherent markings in the universe. Taking traditional views of landscapes from a bird’s-eye view Bastidas, who resides in New York City, decomposes then recomposes the landscapes to create mesmerizing surfaces. The exhibition will be on display through Saturday, Feb. 28.

 Convocation Honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Alisha Thomas Morgan, political talk show radio host and the Georgia General Assembly’s youngest-serving member, was the keynote speaker at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation Wednesday, Jan. 21. Morgan’s speech echoed the theme of this year’s observance, “Are You Living the Dream?” The annual celebration was sponsored by the African American Cultural Society and the Islander Cultural Alliance.

 Hernandez Named Dean of College of Education
Dr. Arthur E. Hernandez has been named dean of the College of Education. He will assume his duties March 1. As dean, Hernandez will supervise academic, faculty and student affairs for the College of Education. He will also oversee the Early Childhood Development Center, University Preparatory High School, Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center, and the college’s bachelors, masters, and doctoral programs. Hernandez is currently the associate dean and chair of the Department of Education and Human Development at the University of Texas-San Antonio. |

The Ed Rachal Foundation has awarded two grants totaling $41,000 to programs at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Recipients are:
- The Center of Coastal Studies- Jay Tarkington received $11,000 to repair and refurbish two resources of the Aquatic Education Program that are integral to the science-based program.
- Department of Geology – Dr. Jim Garrison received $30,000 to purchase a pontoon boat for the Coastal Geology and Hydrogeology Field Methods Research Laboratory.

The Coastal Bend Community Foundation has awarded seven grants totaling $28,500 to programs at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Recipients are:
- College of Education- received $5,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of Corpus Christi.
- Department of Kinesiology- received $3,500 for the National Youth Sports Program.
- College of Liberal Arts- received $4,000 for its “Community Art-Reach” program.
- English Department- received $1,750 for its annual Young Authors Camp.
- Performing Arts Center- received $3,750 for equipment and instruments.
- Coastal Studies- received $5,500 for the Coastal Bend Eco-Historic Project.
- Athletics- received $5,000 for the Summer Basketball Camp for At-Risk Youth.

| The Women’s Center for Education and Service will present “The Vagina Monologues” Thursday, Feb. 12, and Friday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. A silent auction will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. The Vagina Monologues is an Obie Award-winning episodic play written by Eve Ensler on interviews she conducted with hundreds of women about their views on sex, relationships, and violence against women. Children’s author Cathy Travis gave a talk on her book “Constitution Translated for Kids” to around 100 students Tuesday, Jan. 27, in the Early Childhood Development Center library. “Constitution Translated for Kids,” written at the fifth grade level, is a simple translation of the Constitution.
The Islander Cultural Alliance, the Chinese Student Association and the Vietnamese Student Association celebrated the beginning of “The Year of the Ox” as they welcomed the Chinese Lunar New Year Monday, Jan. 26, in the University Center commons. The festivities included a presentation of the ox in Asian cultures.
Students from the Early Childhood Development Center listened to an audio recording of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. giving his 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech during the University’s annual MLK Day Observance, Tuesday. Jan. 20.
More than 275 political science students watched Barack Obama being sworn in as the 44th President of the United States Tuesday, Jan. 20, in the Center for Instruction, Room 103.
New and returning international students were invited to attend a “Meet and Greet” held Tuesday, Jan. 27, in the University Center, Lone Star Ballroom. The event, which was sponsored by the Office of International Education, welcomed all University international students and was open to the campus community. Students also enjoyed games and door prizes.
