Total Graduate Studies and Research Awards for Fiscal Year 2009 Surpass $16 Million

Graduate Studies and Research awards for fiscal year 2009 have surpassed $16 million. April and May awards included $749,778 to Dr. JoAnn McDonald from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for the Governor’s Academy for Teaching Excellence (GATE) Summer Education Program and $275,000 to Dr. Elaine Young from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for the Teacher Quality Grant in Mathematics.

Other awards include:

Dr. David McKee received $26,072 from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for the Center for Coastal Studies Summer Internship Program.

Dr. Lee Smee
received $30,000 from the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program for the Assessment of Nueces Salt Marsh Restoration.

Dr. JoAnn McDonald and Sheryl Roehl received $149,999 from the University of Texas and the U.S. Department of Education for Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching.

O.B. Garcia
received $28,750 from the Texas A&M University-Texarkana and the Texas Education Agency for the Special Education and Recruitment and Retention Grant.

John Adams
received $25,470 from the Port of Corpus Christi for the Maintenance of the Corpus Christi Real-Time Navigation System.

Dr. Jim Needham
and Jo Anna Benavides-Franke received $70,000 from the City of Corpus Christi for the City of Corpus Christi Small Business Development Program.

Dr. Suzzette Chopin
received $89,986 from the National Institutes of Health to begin the VIVA: Obesity Intervention in the West Oso Independent School District Program.

Dr. Eve Layman
received $67,823 from the Department of Heath and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration for the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship.

Dr. John Fernandez
received $164,824 from the University of Texas at El Paso for the Broadening Participation in Computing AE Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions Project.
