Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi announced $70,000 in commitments during the month of March to provide scholarships and resources for the new Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. IBC Bank has committed $30,000 toward the upcoming program; Frost Bank has announced a $20,000 gift; and Beecroft Construction has committed $20,000 toward the endeavor. Full Story

 

Student Groups Clean Up During 'Big Event'Student Groups Clean Up During 'Big Event'
Students from campus organizations painted houses, trimmed trees and mowed yards during EDGE Leadership’s first “Big Event” held Feb. 28 in various locations throughout the city. Free project assistance was reserved for the elderly, those who were unable to do the work themselves and people in need of financial support. The organization develops students’ leadership skills to help them become better leaders on campus, in the community and in the workforce.

 

Environmental Science Class Conducts Mock ExerciseEnvironmental Science Class Conducts Mock Exercise
Students in David Jensen’s Oil Spill Prevention and Response class conducted an oil spill response exercise March 27 in the Corpus Christi Marina. The exercise simulated a protective-action booming strategy in an oil spill event that would threaten the marina and surrounding waters. Students practiced small boat handling, construction of anchor systems, deployment of oil spill boom from a trailer with anchor systems and pulling a boom through an obstacle course.

More than 140 fifth-grade students from the West Oso ISD learned how fingerprints assist in crime investigation at the Science Rules! Exposition March 9 in the University Center. During the interactive learning experience designed to stimulate interests in science, students visited 13 booths staffed by University students, faculty, staff and representatives from the Corpus Christi Police Department and the Nueces County Health Department.
 

'Love in a Box’ Mimics Plight of the Homeless'Love in a Box’ Mimics Plight of the Homeless
The sisters of Omega Phi Alpha spent 24 hours living outdoors in a cardboard box during the "Love in a Box” event from March 27-28 in the Center for Instruction courtyard. During the event to raise awareness about homelessness and mental illness, the community donated non-perishable canned food items, clothing, toiletries and monies to benefit Corpus Christi Metro Ministries.

 
Dr. Ted Guffy Honored Dr. Ted Guffy Honored at Farewell Reception
University faculty and staff were invited to a farewell reception honoring Dr. Ted Guffy, interim dean of the College of Education, March 11 in the Performing Arts Center lobby. Guests included Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Anantha S. Babbili and University President Flavius Killebrew.

The Office of International Education hosted an International Panel Discussion March 24 in the University Center, Lone Star Ballroom. University faculty and staff represented different world regions and offered the audience the opportunity to learn about other customs and cultures without leaving the Island.

Kinesiology Program has been accepted into the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Education Recognition ProgramThe College of Education’s Kinesiology Program has been accepted into the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Education Recognition Program (ERP). The ERP Graduate Studies Program recognizes colleges and universities that offer at least a master’s degree related to strength and conditioning or sport performance. The Department of Kinesiology prepares students for professional careers in athletic training, exercise science, physical education, sports management, sports coaching, and strength/conditioning.

 

Dr. Terry LewisDr. Terry Lewis, director of University Theatre, has been selected as The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) Faculty Fellow for Region VI and will be honored at the national competition April 13-18 in Washington, D.C. The national theater program encourages, recognizes and celebrates the finest and most diverse work produced in university and college theater programs. Region VI includes college and universities from Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri. Kevin Zahradnik, senior theatre major, will also advance to the national competition for receiving the Region VI Award of Excellence in Stage Management.

The Anchor Alumni Club invites University employees who are alumni to attend its next meeting April 16 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Science and Technology Conference Room 177 located inside the Faculty Center. Get involved with your alma mater! Lunch and beverages will be provided. Reservations are requested to determine food order. The Women’s Center for Education and Service and the Women’s Shelter of South Texas will hold their first “Walk A Mile In Her Shoes: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence” awareness walk April 17 beginning at 5:30 p.m. outside the Science and Technology Plaza. Participants may register early or on-site the day of the event beginning at 3 p.m. A shoe decorating contest open to all event participants will be held during the event. Contest entries will be collected at the check-in table and winners will be announced at the close of the event. Men are asked to be team leaders and are encouraged, but not required, to walk in women’s shoes. Registration fees are $5 per person; $10 for teams of two to six; $15 for teams of seven to 14; and $20 for teams of $15 or more. Proceeds will benefit the Women's Shelter of South Texas. The Office of Community Outreach will hold its first “Islander Adventure” May 7-10. This adventure combines an accredited ACA Introduction to Coastal Kayaking skill development course with an exclusive three-day/three-night vacation package featuring accommodations at the Best Western Marina Grand Hotel and guided kayak excursions on Texas Coastal Bend’s scenic bays and estuaries. Faculty/Staff Spring Barbecue
The campus community celebrated the spirit of St. Patrick’s’ Day during the 16th annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation Barbecue held March 17 in the University Center, Lone Star Ballroom. The hundreds who attended enjoyed food, entertainment and had a chance to win one of the many door prizes donated by area merchants.

“Exchanging Images and Ideas from North Texas and South Texas”
An opening reception for the exhibition “Exchanging Images and Ideas from North Texas and South Texas” was held March 5 at the Weil Gallery in the Center for the Arts. The collaborative exhibition featured works by art faculty at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Wild and Wacky Wednesday
Students competed for prizes in physical contests at the 13th annual “Wild and Wacky Wednesday” March 11 on the Bay Hall lawn. Other highlights included a rock wall, a wellness wheel and beer goggles that simulate the effects of alcohol impairment. The annual event to kick-off spring break is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board and Recreational Sports.

AutoCheck Clinic
Area drivers received a free emissions check to determine if their vehicles were polluting at the AutoCheck Clinic during the Moody High School Clean Air Fair held March 7. AutoCheck is a state-of-the-art auto engine analyzer that quickly identifies vehicles that are discharging harmful pollutants into the air. When a high-polluting automobile is identified, AutoCheck schedules the vehicle for repairs at a participating garage, typically with no cost to the owner.

Preparing applications for federal student aid
Prospective college students seeking financial assistance received free help in preparing applications for federal student aid during the FAFSA Completion Workshop March 28 in the University Center. This was the fifth consecutive year that the Office of Student Financial Assistance has helped prospective students interested in attending any university complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms.

10th annual “Telling Our Grandmothers’ Stories”
The Women’s Center for Education and Service presented the 10th annual “Telling Our Grandmothers’ Stories” exhibition March 25 in the University Center, Lone Star Ballroom. The exhibition celebrating Women’s History Month captured the history of women of all ages, ethnicities and interests. Stories were conveyed through oral, video and audio presentations, as well as artifacts, letters, photographs, journals, poetry, prose and other forms of expression.
