College of Science and Technology Hosts Science Fair
Around 700 students competed for ribbons, medals and scholarships at the 20th annual Coastal Bend Science Fair hosted by the College of Science and Technology. Students prepared experiments utilizing the scientific method and gave oral presentations to a panel of judges that included scientists, engineers, faculty members, educators, college science students and community members. |

ECDC Students Make a ‘Splash’
Students from the Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) celebrated the end of the school year during “Splash Day” Tuesday, May 20, on the ECDC lawn. The fun included relay races, an obstacle course and maze, ball toss, moon jump, volleyball, tetherball, a two-story inflatable slide, slip-and-slides and an ice cream social.

Employees Work to Become ‘Lean, Green and Keen’
University staff participated in workshops on a wide variety of topics during the annual Employee Development Day Wednesday, May 21. The theme for the day-long event which focused on professional development, general knowledge, and personal growth was “Lean, Green and Keen: Believing It and Achieving It.” During a luncheon, keynote speaker Kevin Bracy presented motivational words on “Change…the One Constant in Life.” |

Around 820 students from the Colleges of Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Health Sciences, and Science and Technology received their diplomas and advanced degrees during the Spring Commencement Saturday, May 17, at the American Bank Center. Nelsen Named Executive VP for Finance and Administration
Jody Nelsen, associate vice president for Business Affairs at the University of Texas at Dallas, has been named the new executive vice president for Finance and Administration pending approval of The Texas A&M System Board of Regents. Nelsen, who fills the position vacated by the retirement of Robert L. Lovitt, will assume her new duties on Monday, Aug. 4. A summa cum laude graduate in Business Administration from Loyola University in Chicago, Nelson began her career at the University of Texas at Dallas in 1991 as manager of Administrative Services. New Executive Director of HRI to Assume Duties in July
Dr. Larry D. McKinney, director of Coastal Fisheries and senior director of Aquatic Resources for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), has been named executive director of the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies. He will assume his new duties in July. McKinney earned his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University in 1976 and is a recognized authority on the habitats of amphipod crustaceans in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Full Story |

The kick-off event for BoldFuture for the Coastal Bend, a community visioning initiative co-sponsored by Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Del Mar College, was held Tuesday, May 20, at the American Bank Center. Graduates Receive Commission into Naval Nurse Corps
Three graduates who received their commission into the Naval Nurse Corps were among the students honored at the College of Nursing and Health Sciences Recognition Ceremony in the Performing Arts Center. The students commissioned were Lisa M. Davis, Joshua J. Morgan and Rhys A. Parker. Guest speaker was Capt. Holly Bennett, senior nurse executive and director of Branch Health Clinics, Naval Health Clinics Corpus Christi. |

| Awards, Honors and Grants |
Dr. Greg Stunz, associate professor of marine biology, has received a $150,000 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s 2007 Advanced Research Program (ARP) for his study “Habitat Fragmentation in Marine Ecosystems: Impact of Habitat Loss to Marine Fishes,” which assesses the impact of habitat fragmentation of seagrass meadows to fisheries. The ARP program supports research designed to attract and retain the best students and researchers, and help provide the knowledge base needed for innovation.

Dr. Daniel J. Jorgensen has been selected as the 2008 Public Service Educator of the Year by the Coastal Bend Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration. Jorgensen is an associate professor of public administration and chair of the public administration department. The Coastal Bend chapter is one of more than 100 American Society for Public Administration chapters nationwide and serves Aransas, Kleberg, Jim Wells, Nueces and San Patricio counties. |

Dr. JoAnn McDonald was honored with the MVP Award by the Corpus Christi Convention & Visitors Bureau during a May luncheon celebrating National Tourism Month. McDonald, assistant professor in the College of Education, was recognized for her work in bringing the 2012 Science Teachers Association of Texas convention to the city. The meeting is expected to draw 4,000 people and inject an estimated $1.5 million into the local economy.

Dr. Nadina Duran-Hutchings of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics has been named program director of the 2008-09 Teacher Quality Grant “Quantitative Experiences in Decision-Making” for high school teachers. Dr. George Tintera and Dr. Margaret Bolick are co-directors. The grant program, totaling $87,000, will prepare high school teachers to teach the newly-mandated fourth mathematics course effectively and will offer three new graduate courses. |

Junior finance and accounting major Giancarlo Berrocal was one of 200 students from 60 countries who participated in the international essay competition at the 38th annual St. Gallen Symposium in Switzerland. As a recipient of the St. Gallen Wings of Excellence Award, Berrocal received an expenses paid trip to Switzerland to present his paper “Financial Instruments Innovation: Risk or Negligence?” Berrocal was one of 200 students selected from among 1,000 applicants. |

The Art Museum of South Texas will hold its’ “A Night of Living Art” summer fundraiser, Saturday, June 14, at the Museum, 1902 N. Shoreline Blvd. The Art Museum of South Texas is affiliated with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and proceeds from the annual event help support the museum’s educational and exhibition programs. The cost is $75 for members and $100 for non-members. For more information, call ext. 3500. | The Texas A&M University System has granted an exclusive license to BreakAway Ltd. of Hunt Valley, Md., to commercialize Pulse!! The Virtual Clinical Learning Lab, a game-based software platform for medical education conceived, researched and produced at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. BreakAway is developing and marketing new commercial applications for wider use to meet the demands to better teach and train medical professionals. |

The brunch is held each spring to thank the seniors for their contributions to A&M-Corpus Christi. |

Students in the Oil Spill Prevention and Response class conducted an emergency response exercise Friday, May 2, at the Lawrence Street “T” head in the Corpus Christi Marina. The exercise simulated a protective-action strategy to shield the Columbus ship Niña from damage by deploying a boom to form a barrier between the ship’s hull and the spilled oil. |

In all, 71 master’s students and 13 doctoral students were hooded in front of the largest audience ever to attend a College of Education Hooding Ceremony.
