Farewell Reception Held for College of Education Dean
Faculty, staff, students and friends gathered to say goodbye to Dr. Dee Hopkins (right) at a reception in the University Center’s Legacy Hall. Hopkins, dean of the College of Education, has accepted a position at West Virginia University. During Hopkins’ time at A&M-Corpus Christi, the Ph.D. in counseling was created, along with the Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction, and the master’s degree in kinesiology.

Exihibit Features Small Works by Students and Alumni
The Department of Art and University Galleries held an opening reception for the “New Small Works” Friday, June 6, in the Islander Art Gallery. The exhibit featured smaller works by A&M-Corpus Christi students, alumni, and local artists. The exhibition celebrated small works of art created in various media.

Coastal Bend Teachers Get Lessons In Math
More than 200 teachers from across the Coastal Bend participated in the (ME)^2 By the Sea Mathematics Conference Friday, June 13, in the Center for Instruction. The annual conference, sponsored by the University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Coastal Council of Teachers of Mathematics, emphasizes curriculum alignment and mathematics engagement for students from pre-kindergarten through college.

Students Learn Creativity at Theatre Workshop
High school students experienced an intensive and creative theatre atmosphere during the Summer Theatre Workshop. Aspiring thespians studied acting, voice and movement while technical theatre students attended classes in production design, lighting and costumes. Area high school teachers served as assistant directors and attended sessions on directing taught by guest directors and the University’s theatre faculty.

Tarpon Foundation Reception Honors Supporters
The Tarpon Foundation held an end-of-the-year reception for more than 50 supporters of Islander athletics Wednesday, June 18, in the University Center, Legacy Room. The Tarpon Foundation is the primary fundraising arm of the Islander athletics and provides financial support to many Islander athletes. |

Dr. Deborah Overath, an assistant professor in the College of Science and Technology, has received the 2008 Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans Distinguished Undergraduate Institution Mentor Award. The award is given to a doctorate-holding faculty member at a four-year undergraduate institution who has a demonstrated record of encouraging minority students to pursue advanced science degrees and who participates in minority education activities. |

Dr. Patrick Crowley, an international economist and professor of economics, was honored as the Outstanding Research Scholar for 2008 by The Academy Speaks at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Crowley has twice served as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Suomen Pannkki/Bank of Finland. He is a former journal editor of Current Politics and Economics of Europe and editorial member of both the Journal of European Integration and the Journal of Economic Asymmetries. |

Dr. Robert Vokurka, chair of the Department of Finance, Economics and Decision Sciences, has been appointed to the 2008 Board of Directors for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. The award is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive.The board is composed of approximately 500 leading experts from industry, professional and trade organizations, education and healthcare organizations and government.

Dr. Marsha Grace, professor of curriculum and instruction in the Department of English, received the 2008 Hall of Fame Alumni Award from Cushing High School in Cushing, Okla. and was recently inducted into the high school’s Alumni Hall of Fame. Grace, whose family has lived in Cushing for more than 50 years, is a 1971 graduate of Cushing High School.

High school and junior high students displayed their musical talents on woodwind, brass and percussion instruments during the Islander Band Camp finale concert in the Performing Arts Center. The camp, hosted by the Department of Music, brings together young musicians for a week of highly-intensive music training with some of the area’s finest musicians.

The English Department’s 16th annual Young Authors' Camp provided elementary and middle school students with opportunities to expand their interest in writing and to experience writing as a fun and creative opportunity for self-expression and communication with others.

Rising Scholars Coordinator Noe Ortega spoke on “How to Choose and How to Apply to Graduate Programs” Friday, June 6, during a conversation sponsored by the University’s McNair Scholars Program. The program provides college juniors and seniors with opportunities to conduct research and publish or present their findings and offers assistance in applying to graduate school. Ortega was recently accepted to a Ph.D. program at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
