The University’s United Student Veteran Organization (USVO) held a Veterans Day candlelight vigil to honor Texas military members who have sacrificed their lives for our country. During the ceremony Tuesday, Nov. 11, in Lee Plaza, the names of Texans who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan were read. The USVO is a recently chartered campus organization that assists veterans in making the transformation from military to civilian life.
 
“Jimmy V Music Festival” Music Festival Raises Funds for Cancer Research
Ten local bands helped raise awareness and monies for cancer research at the “Jimmy V Music Festival” Saturday, Nov. 8, on the Bay Hall lawn. Jimmy Valvano, who coached the North Carolina State Wolfpack to the 1983 NCAA Basketball Championship, died of metastatic cancer in 1993. Proceeds from the festival, sponsored by the Delta Chi fraternity benefited the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
 

Islander Team Lends a Helping Hand
Islander softball players
recently spent a Saturday morning painting and adding the finishing touches on a Habitat for Humanity home. The volunteers also cleaned and prepared a nearby lot for construction of a home and helped organize building supplies at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore retail outlet. Habitat for Humanity is a faith-based charitable organization that builds affordable homes for low income families.

 
Panel of Professors Discusses Cultural Integration
More than 150 international students attended a “One World, One Mission to Promote Unity” panel discussion on cultural integration Wednesday, Nov. 19, as part of International Education Week. Professors taking part in the discussion moderated by Dr. Bob Bezdek were Dr. John Fernandez, Dr. Patrick Crowley, Dr. Bryant Griffith, and Dr. Elisabeth Mermann-Jozwiak. The discussion was sponsored by Academic Affairs.
 

“Virtual Reality Day”Students Experience ‘Virtual Reality Day’
Cunningham Middle School seventh-graders
learned about sea level changes and the coastal environment through virtual fly-bys and 3-D topography drawings of Earth and the Gulf of Mexico during a “Virtual Reality Day” Friday, Nov. 21, at the Education Center for Math and Science. Students also learned about the scientific method through experiments that relate to hurricanes. The event was presented by the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies' Laguna Outreach Project.

 

Awards, Honors, and Grants
 
University President Flavius KillebrewUniversity President Flavius Killebrew has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). The association which represents 430 public colleges and universities throughout the country is dedicated to improving communities through education, stewardship and engagement. Enrolling more than three million students, these institutions fulfill the expectations of a public university by working for the public good through education, stewardship and engagement, thereby improving the lives of people in their community, their region and their state.
 

Don LunaDon Luna, a professor in the College of Liberal Arts, has been selected as the 2008 University Educator of the Year by the Texas Educational Theatre Association (TETA) in recognition of his achievements and contributions to educational theatre. He will be honored during the TETA convention Sunday, Jan. 25, in Houston, Texas. Luna, who arrived at the University in 1994, has been in theatre for the past 25 years. He has directed and acted in scores of plays and has had starring roles in multiple film and television projects.

 

Dr. Andy PikerThe Rotary Foundation has awarded a 2009 World Peace Fellowship to Dr. Andy Piker as part of the Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution program. Piker, an associate professor in the College of Liberal Arts, will attend the International Rotary Conference in Bangkok, Thailand, in summer 2009. The program was established by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International in partnership with Chulalongkorn University in 2004, and focuses on conflict resolution training.

 

Pulse!! The Virtual Clinical Learning Lab that uses videogame-based technologies to deliver experiential medical education won the Innovation Research Award from the Navy’s Medical Service Corps at the American Military Surgeons of the United States annual meeting in November. In addition, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has received $2.4 million in federal funds through the Office of Naval Research for continued development of Pulse!! technology, bringing the total federal investment to almost $14.7 million.

 

Margaret DechantAssociate Vice President for Enrollment Margaret Dechant has been elected president of the Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (TACRAO). Dechant began serving a one-year term Wednesday, Nov. 5. In her role as president she is chair of the executive committee and an ex-officio member of all appointed TACRAO committees. TACRAO is a voluntary nonprofit professional education association of cooperating collegiate institutions that contributes to the advancement of higher education.

 

A paper on “Managing Your Contracts” written by Judy Harral and Lori Messer of the University’s Purchasing Department has been selected as one of five finalists for the 2009 Best Practices Award by the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers (SACUBO). Harral and Messer have been invited to present their proposal at the annual SACUBO meeting in Hot Springs, Va., next April at which time the winning entry will be chosen. 

 
Around the Island
 

The University will hold its annual “Islander Lights” celebration Friday, Dec. 5, at the Performing Arts Center Plaza. The holiday festivities kick off at 5 p.m. with a 4-mile Islander fun run and 1 ½-mile walk around the hike and bike trail followed by Santa’s visit to the Island at 6 p.m. The Wishes and Dreams Toy Drive and Student Picnic will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the University Services Center Plaza. At 7:30 p.m., the switch will be thrown to illuminate the campus along Ocean Drive in Islander blue, green and white lights. The evening will include music, games and activities. The celebration is open to the public.

 

Singing cowboy poet Michael Martin Murphey will once again celebrate the holiday season at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi when he brings his highly-acclaimed “Cowboy Christmas” concert back to the Performing Arts Center Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 to $30 for adults and $7 for children and students. The University will hold its fall 2008 Commencement Saturday, Dec. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the American Bank Center arena. Commencement speaker will be Dr. Frank B. Traditions from throughout the world
Traditions from throughout the world were showcased during Culture Fest, the annual campus event promoting world understanding and unity. The celebration was sponsored by the Islander Cultural Alliance.

 

Native American community members shared artwork, music and stories
Native American community members shared artwork, music and stories about their cultural heritage with more than 170 ECDC students during a Native American drum circle Thursday, Nov. 13. Presenters included Larry “Running Turtle” Salazar and Ernest “Graywolf” Salazar, both from the Tsa La Gi tribe of the Cherokee Nation, and Vicki “Smiling Water” Harraghy, whose Choctaw name is Yukpachi Oka.

 

“Heart Gallery of South Texas” opening reception
Photos of 62 foster children seeking permanent homes were displayed at the annual “Heart Gallery of South Texas” opening reception Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center. The exhibit, which will remain on display through Wednesday, Dec. 31, coincides with National Adoption Month and is a collaborative project between the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Community Outreach and College of Liberal Arts.

 
Celebration of Women in the Arts
Holiday card making, make-up application, cake decorating and therapeutic collage were among the highlights at the “Celebration of Women in the Arts” held Thursday, Nov. 6, in the University Center, Lone Star Ballroom. The annual event, presented by the Women’s Center for Education and Service, displays and celebrates the artistic talents of University students. Participants also visited interactive art stations, watched song and dance routines and viewed and purchased artwork.

Eddie Aldrete
, senior vice president of the International Bank of Commerce (IBC) in San Antonio, spoke on the “The Current Economic Outlook for South Texas, Immigration and Mexican Issues” during the World Affairs Council of South Texas luncheon Wednesday, Nov. 12. Aldrete monitors local and federal polices that directly impact the finance market and international trade.
